How Long Does a Mini Facelift Last?

Patients consider many factors when contemplating plastic surgery, including the length of time the results last. With a mini facelift in particular, many people are attracted to the less invasive nature of this surgery, but also have concerns over how long it can rejuvenate the face. Double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Min S. Ahn explains the timeline patients can expect, as well as how to extend those results.

Setting Expectations

Dr. Ahn performs mini facelift on patients who are primarily bothered by the emerging appearance of jowls (sagging skin beneath the chin and jawline). He uses discreet incisions to tighten muscles and reduce jowliness.

The minilift that Dr. Ahn performs uses the same “deep plane” technique as the lower face lift. The only difference is that the incision is shorter behind the ear.  As a result, his mini facelift patients normally see their results last as long as a lower face lift, between eight and 10 years.  

Timeline Is Not the Only Factor

It is important to emphasize that the differences between a mini facelift and a facelift go well beyond the amount of time the results last. Patients with moderate to severe signs of aging on the neck and lower face generally require a lower face and neck lift to achieve the type of changes they hope to see. People who choose a mini facelift do so because they want to address early signs of aging and extend the youthfulness of their face. During a consultation, Dr. Ahn can offer his professional opinion on which (if either) surgery is better suited to each patient’s face.

Take Care of the Skin

While surgical technique plays a large role in the duration of mini facelift results, the results are also affected significantly by the patient’s own behaviors. Plastic surgery can remove years from a patient’s face, but it is also up to the patient to proactively take steps to avoid accelerating the aging process. This includes:

• Moisturizing regularly
• Not smoking
• Avoiding sun exposure (and using sunscreen with a strong SPF when in the sun)
• Exercising and eating a healthy diet to avoid weight fluctuation
• Performing noninvasive skin tightening treatments such as SUPERB
